We all know about how tragedy is a trope in LGBTQ+ lit, movies, TV, etc. It really sucks, but when it’s done well it can be cathartic. I want to promote happy queer content as much as possible, but today I’m going to talk about something that’s not happy.
I’m going to preface this by saying that I haven’t read the book written by Christopher Isherwood. I have it and I want to read it but I haven’t. However, I absolutely love this movie. It’s beautifully directed by Tom Ford, who is a fashion designer by the way. It’s a very artistic movie and really puts the audience in the time and place of the 1960s.
It’s not a happy movie, that’s for sure. George, played by Colin Firth has lost the man he loves and as a result, is very depressed. I feel like this movie was a good portrayal of grief and depression. I thought it was beautifully filmed and well done.
It’s tragic, it’s gay, but Colin Firth did such an amazing job as George and it’s worth a watch just to see him work.
