Book review – The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

Caidyn's review (1)

The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy, #3)

  1. The Bear and the Nightingale – 4.5/5
  2. The Girl in the Tower – 4/5

When I finished this book, I felt very disappointed by it.

I read this series at the wrong time and I forced myself to read it all rather than take a step back and wait for another time. And that’s, honestly, what I should have done. After reading the second book and absorbing nearly nothing of the plot and characters, I shouldn’t have read this. But, I did because I wanted to finish the series.

Honestly, I don’t know much of what happened in this book. I loved the familiar characters and sinking into it was like a warm bath, but the plot? I couldn’t remember it and wasn’t a fan of where it was going because I didn’t remember anything from The Girl in the Tower. Then, the new characters went over my head for around the same reason.

I also was doing a lot of processing the week that I read this, so I wasn’t giving it my full attention. I’d read for a bit, then kind of space out (while still reading) and then come back to find things hadn’t changed much and just kept on trucking through the pages.

I really wanted to love this series, too. The first book was so promising, then life happened and I stopped caring about what I was reading. Reading, for me, is self-care. It doesn’t always matter what I read, but the act of reading is how I can take care of myself. I should learn not to read fiction since I really have to pay attention. Nonfiction is a better choice.

So, as I said, my reaction to this book is my fault. I know it is since I have a feeling that I’d enjoy it more during a reread. Basically, I’m going to come back to this series again one day when I’ve forgotten most of the details and it feels as if it’s time to give it another try.

Talk to me!
What did you think of this series?
Have you ever forced yourself to finish a book/book series?
