May Wrap-up

Where the hell did May go? I swear, it was here then gone. 2019 is just going by so quickly, y’all.

But, let’s do an overview of what I read. Links will take you to my reviews of them except for the ones that are pending!

Also, there’s going to be a quick teaser for June things that you all will, hopefully, be looking forward to.

I read 33 books this month, which is a whole lot! The downside? I DNFed a lot of them. That means my average rating was 2.9. Tbh, I’m not happy with that total. But May was kind of a slumpy month for me. I’m glad it’s gone and that we’re on to June!

June Preview

I’m very, very happy to announce that Chantel is going to be coming back in June with posts! Since it’s Pride, I know she’s going to be featuring some queer books, TV shows, and movies. I’m very excited about it, so, be excited with me for some queer posts and recommendations!

Talk to me!
Did you read any of these books?
What was the best book you read in May?

May Haul

Copy of Copy of Top Ten Tuesday

I was pretty good this month with books! My parents got me a couple of book boxes this month to celebrate being done with grad school, then I treated myself for new releases!

I got three books this month! Funny enough, I wasn’t a fan of The Secret History. But, I’m planning on reading Necessary People and The Buried in June or July! Aka, when there’s time and I’m in the mood for them.

Physical ARCs

I DNFed A Nearly Normal Family, so, obviously, that didn’t go over well. Still a huge thanks to BookishFirst and the publisher for sending me the ARC! Then, I got Magic for Liars! Another thank you to BookishFirst and the publisher! I really enjoyed this one. It was just so damn good.

Penguin Monarchs

I love these little books, so I got a few more that I will read in the next few months! I’m happy that I decided to get some of the earlier kings and I’m also excited to read about James I since he’s a monarch I want to know more about.

I love and look at this finished copy! I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this so I’m very happy that I own the finished version of it to enjoy.

Unplugged Book Box

As I said, my parents got me a couple of boxes. They got me the Adult and YA boxes offered by the wonderful company that this is.

The prompt for the YA box was If Not Now, When? It came with a pair of socks, face mask, small candle, and a mason jar. I loved the socks and candle! The mason jar is fantastic to drink out of, too. As for the book, I’m not too sure. I’ll give it a try but it’s about the aftermath of a school shooting. That’s not a topic I enjoy reading about. As I said, I’m going to give it a try!

The Adult box was a bit more my speed! The prompt for it was Grief, which was a very needed topic for me. It came with a hand towel, candle, face mask, essential oil roller, and candy. I absolutely love the candle and roller. I’ll definitely be using the face mask very soon as well! And the book sounds super interesting. I’m curious how it links with grief because it’s not very apparent.

Random Preorders and Buys

A couple of Sundays ago, I went with a friend from my master’s program to a boozy drag lunch. We parked near a used bookstore then walked, so when we got back (still a bit tipsy) we got books! This is my haul from that, which is, well, quite a few. I got Social Work Practice and Psychopharmacology and Dying Well for social work. Then, I’ve had my eye on Winter King, Manson, and Contagion for a while now. Then, One of Us and Serial Killers and Psychopaths fits my reading mood at the moment!

I got two preorders this month! Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered is just… ugh. I’m so damn excited to read this!! Same with If You See Her. I’m really excited since I love Ania Ahlborn. If you love horror, you have to check her out.

Talk to me!

I feel this is an accurate depiction of this blog sometimes.

Therefore, I want to do something for you all. No, not a giveaway. One day that will happen! I just need to save my money at the moment.

I want to do a Q&A! Y’all can ask any questions you want. About blogging, about managing this blog, about me, about grad school/social work. Whatever! So, pop on down to the comments and ask something!

But, again:

Top Ten Tuesday – Books With My Favorite Color On the Cover

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018!

I wasn’t a fan of the prompt this week, so I decided to go back in time with books that have my favorite color on them!

Radio Silence

I’m finally reading this book and, let me tell you, it’s really good. I’m finally on the Alice Oseman train! I love that it’s hella diverse.

The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2)

Guess who’s hyped for this book? Meeee! I also have an ARC so I’m just fucking excited to dig into it. After I reread the first book, that is.

Needful Things

This is one of those Stephen King books that no one talks about, but I really liked. And, well, it has my favorite color on it. Hopefully y’all are starting to figure out which it is.

1536 by Suzannah Lipscomb

I can’t go without putting a Tudor history book on here, can I? But, this is a fantastic book. An easy five stars for me because it truly explored a single year that had a lot of stuff happen in it.

American Gods

If anyone doesn’t know that I love American Gods, you must be very new to this blog. (If so, hello and welcome!) But, seriously. I love this book. And it features my favorite color.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)

Unpopular opinion, but this is definitely one of my favorite HP books. Maybe my favorite, but it’s so hard to concretely nail this one down. Part of me wonders if it’s influenced by the color of the book…

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3)

I love the illustrated edition of this. I gleefully hoard them and I’m starting to get worried about running out of room on my shelf since I own so many copies of the books. But, I will find a way to make them all fit.

The Witch Elm

I don’t talk about Tana French enough, I think. This one isn’t my favorite by her, but I feel so blessed that the publisher gave me an e-ARC and that I had the chance to read it early. Plus, you know, it has my favorite color on it.

A Woman Is No Man

I was reading this, then I had to pause it because life happened. I fully intend to pick it up again, though!

Early Riser

I was going to read this book this month, but I picked it up and wasn’t in the mood for an epic sci-fi with footnotes. I’ll definitely be reading this when I’m in that kind of mood!

Down the TBR Hole

Down the TBR Hole

Down the TBR Hole is a meme created by Lia @ Lost in a Story.

Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well that’s going to change!

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Because She Loves Me

I’ve been wanting to read this forever, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Reading the description still has me very interested in it!

Verdict: Keep

The Dying Game: A Curious History of Death

I’ve already read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and I had a practicum in hospice. So I don’t really know how much more I can learn about the history of death and the things that happen to bodies.

Verdict: GO!

You know what? I’ve just not interested in this book.

Verdict: GO!

A Journal of the Plague Year

This is one of those books I want to read because it’s a first-hand account of plague. Yet, I also know that it’s going to be super boring and detailed and my eyes might start bleeding while I read.

Verdict: GO!

The Haunted Hotel: A Mystery of Modern Venice

Eh. I dunno. It doesn’t sound that interesting to me.

Verdict: GO!

Mystic River

I’ve wanted to read this book forever, but I know that it’s very hard to read and will probably scar me emotionally. So, I’ve been saving it for the right time. That time just hasn’t come yet.

Verdict: Keep

Wildwood Dancing (Wildwood, #1)

While I really like the cover, I don’t think I’d like the book.

Verdict: GO!

Third Girl

It’s Poirot, so I’m going to read it.

Verdict: Keep

The Palace Job (Rogues of the Republic, #1)

A heist book? You know I’m going to read it. I just need to find a copy.

Verdict: Keep

Parade's End

I think I wanted to read this because of the miniseries. Years later, I’ve never watched the miniseries or read this book.

Verdict: GO!

Last TBR: 1593

Books kept: 4

Books removed: 6

Current TBR: 1580

The count continues to go down! I’m doing my best to read books off my TBR, so I think that really helps. Or when someone likes my “review” for a book and I don’t recognize the title, I go to see what the book is. Usually I remove it from my TBR!

30 Interesting Questions

Another day, another tag! A huge thanks to the ever wonderful Sara for tagging me in this! It looks like it’s going to be super fun, although it’ll definitely be long.

1. What are your nicknames? What do you prefer to be called?

My boss calls me Cai because he likes one syllable names. So, Caidyn gets shortened to Cai. I prefer to be called Caidyn, but that’s what they call me Cai at work!

2. How often do you doodle? What do your doodles look like?

I’m not a doodler. It’s never been my thing!

3. What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep? Toss and turn? Try to get up and do something productive?

I usually toss and turn until I get comfortable. But, if it’s just going on forever and I know I won’t be able to sleep, I usually reach for my phone to read a book until I get sleepy. I know reading on your phone doesn’t help much, but it’s what I do.

4. Do people consider you to be talkative or quiet?

I’m quiet at first, then I don’t shut up. A few weeks ago, I was told by a classmate that she thought I was an extrovert! Shocked the hell out of me.

5. What makes you cry?

Sad things? Usually, TV shows make me cry. I’m not a crier on my own and I need to see someone else cry to get me to cry. Also, super weird things make me cry. Like when Archie (Harry and Meghan’s kid) was born, I got super emotional. Also her mother’s day post made me tear up.

6. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Just one thing?? I hate it when people talk and can’t realize when I don’t want to hear what they have to say. Like, my mom and a coworker just talk and talk and talk. But they need you to make noises and comments so that means I get distracted from what I’m doing.

7. How many times a day do you look at yourself in the mirror?

A few times. Morning and night. Then anytime I use the bathroom. But, I don’t check myself all the time.

8. What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?

When I was a kid, I legitimately thought that babies were born out of people’s butts. I was convinced that was how birth worked.

9. What is the guilty pleasure you enjoy too much to give up?

Eh, I don’t know? I don’t really consider any of my pleasures guilty. I like what I like and that isn’t necessarily what other people like.

10. Who performs the most random acts of kindness out of everyone you know?

Definitely my mom. We’re tight on cash in my house — lots of financial stuff has happened over the last two years — but she always gives me money when I need it and she can spare a bit.

11. How often do you read the newspaper? Which sections?

I only read Google News. And, I got so burnt out on news during the 2016 and 2017 news cycle. If I’m reading the news, I’m usually reading about TV shows, celebrities, and other things like that.

12. Which animal scares you the most?

Spiders. Hate those things.

13. Are you more likely to avoid conflict or engage with it?

Engage! I’m very comfortable with conflict and I have no problem getting into it with someone. If I have a problem, 9/10 I’ll be telling you.

14. What is the most recent compliment you’ve received?

I think it was my mom telling me how grateful she is that I pull my own weight and then some in the house. My dad’s having knee surgery today (!!!) so I’m having to step up even more to make sure that what he does around the house is covered.

15. What question are you tired of hearing?

I don’t think I’m tired of hearing any questions. At least, none immediately pop into mind!

16. What is the strangest thing you have eaten?

When I was 13ish, my dad let me eat pâté. I’ll never forgive him for it.

17. Do you have a whole lot of acquaintances or just a few very close friends?

A mixture of both? I have Chantel, who is definitely my best friend. Then I have two other friends I’ve known from childhood and I’m still close with. Another close friend is in my master’s program with me. But, then I have a whole lot of acquaintances from the blog, bookstagram, Goodreads, etc.

18. Do you have a catchphrase?

Nope. Not that I know of.

19. What’s your all-time favourite town or city? Why?

London! I just have great memories of being there. Funny ones, too. But, I just love that city with all of my heart. I’ll definitely be going back one day.

20. If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?

Been there, done that. Given that I’m trans, I’ve already gone through a legal name change once. I’ve considered doing it again — I got rid of my old middle name but I regret it and wish I had kept it so I had two middle names; the old and the new — but I don’t need the expense and the hassle.

21. When was the last time you lied?

No clue. I do my best not to lie.

22. What’s something that amazes you?

Tbh, how ignorant some people can be.

23. Would you rather be the first person to explore a planet or be the inventor of a drug that cures a deadly disease?

Hmm. Inventor of a drug that cures a deadly disease. Maybe in my field, I’d like to be the creator of a therapy that helps people in a very applicable way.

24. What is your favourite amateur activity?

I really enjoy bookstagram! I have no interest in being a photographer, but I really enjoy taking pictures and editing them.

25. What was your first thought when you got up this morning?

“Is it six already?” Usually, I wake up at 5 or 5:30. When the day this posts, I’ll probably be swearing about it being 4am or something. My dad has to be at the hospital for his surgery by 6:15.

26. What is your favourite song (at least at the moment)?

Right now, I’m really into pop. So, I’d think Sucker by The Jonas Brothers.

27. List someone you know and describe them in five words.

I’m gonna do Chantel. Funny, sweet, hella gay, awkward.

28. You can select one person from history and have them truthfully answer one question. Who would you select and what would the question be?

I’d want to meet Anne Boleyn and ask her why she became queen. I want to know if she was the pursuer or if she was pursued and ugh. I have so many questions that I would want to ask her, though!

29. Which celebrity or artist do you resemble the most?

I have no clue. I don’t think I really resemble anyone famous!

30. What do you want me to know?

I want you to know that I love you and you’re awesome!

Wow, lots of questions there!

I’m going to tag:

Sam | Virginia | Laura

But that list isn’t exhaustive! As always, if you want to do this, feel free to! Just please link it back to me so I can read your answers.
