First Lines Friday

First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

She’d never gone this deep.

Gyre wriggled her armored body another centimeter into the crevice, then eased her bag of gear after her. The plating on the back of her calf scraped over the stone, and she winced at the noise. Nobody had warned her that the opening to the lower cave system was so small — or empty. To be fair, she hadn’t gotten a lot of warning or preparation. She’d been too eager to get below the surface to question if there should have been more than the limited orientation she’d received.

First off, this is an ARC! All those sentences above are liable to change. But, they’re awesome sentences, aren’t they?

This book has been on my radar for a while and I’ve had the ARC for a while as well.

It also comes out the day before my birthday, which will make my preorder a fantastic present to myself!

It is…

The Luminous Dead

My suggestion to you: Don’t read the synopsis. It gives away too much!

What you need to know is that Gyre signed up as a caver to explore a cave system. And things aren’t entirely what they seem. Gyre, the person who’s giving her directions, and the cave itself.

Reading this is so exhilarating. Not only that but there are only two characters — both strong women with iffy pasts. And, I’ve also heard that it might be queer. (One reviewer said queer women soooo you know.)

The writing is great. The plot is so interesting. I never want to put it down when I read it. Oh, and it’s creepy af. Just, note to all of you, don’t be like me and read this with all the lights off and your phone playing cave noises.

Talk to me!
Is this on your TBR?
Do you have claustrophobia?
