My Netgalley/Edelweiss Ban

Hello, my name is Caidyn and I have a problem.

This problem? Requesting books on Netgalley and Edelweiss. (More the former than the latter.)

Chantel has been @ me like this for ages.

In short, I just don’t know when to say when with requesting. Earlier this year, I started a Google Doc to help me keep a list of all that I have. Which was nice because it’s super clear and easy to see what books I have, where they’re from, and when I need to read them by.

However, I don’t look at them when I request to see what months are heavier or lighter than others. This means I have some months with 10 ARCs and some with 0.

Right now, I have 27 ARCs from Netgalley, 6 from Edelweiss, and 2 physical ones to read. Only one book is a repeat because I requested on both and, somehow, got accepted on both. Still, that’s 34 ARCs altogether. And more if I get accepted for books I’ve requested through the websites or directly from publishers.

Therefore, now through January, I’m going to ban myself from requesting ARCs.

My caveats:

  • They’re books I’m highly anticipating, not books that “sound interesting” to me.
  • I am given a freebie/invited to read it.
  • I can get my number down to 10 total.

I have a problem and I’m going to do my best to stop it. Because I don’t have time to read all the books like I did before. I usually read ARCs at work, however I don’t work as much so I don’t have as much down time to read them. Also, I just don’t have time in general to read them unless I start scheduling them in, which I honestly might have to for my sanity.

So, that’s my goal. I’m going to do posts checking back in with how I’m doing on this.

Talk to me!
Do you think I can do it?
Have you ever put yourself on a ban? How did it go?

  2. I’m putting myself on a book buying ban from now until probably probably my birthday in early January. I have a lot of pre-orders coming in, and I realized that I spend a LOT of time looking to buy books than actually reading them. I did this back in August, and read 8 books like it was nothing. Good luck to us both! 🙂

    • It’s just so easy. Press a button or two and boom. You’ve suddenly requested ten books that come out on the same day. I’m weird with e-books as well, but it’s definitely easy to get sucked down into it!

  4. Netgalley was a problem early on for me, simply because I didn’t think I would get any approvals so I requested like 15 books at one time, and then about half were approved the next day. Lesson learned!
